Michelle Bauer

The term has been tossed around and abused to the point of being almost meaningless these days, but Michelle Bauer is one of the three original Queens of Scream from back when the phrase “scream queen” actually meant you were an actress that starred (was stalked, tormented, and, ah, screamed) primarily in a slew of enjoyable B movies. She was the Penthouse pet of the month in July 1981 and began her film career in a handful of adult oriented movies and fetish films like BAD GIRLS (1981), CAFE FLESH (1982), JANE BONDA’S BIZARRE WORKOUT (1984), PONY GIRL (1985), KIDNAPPED GIRLS AGENCY (1985) and BEVERLY HILLS GIRLS (1986) before moving on to a ton of great B movies and slightly more mainstream films. She first worked with director Fred Olen Ray in 1986 on THE TOMB, ROLLER BLADE, and ARMED RESPONSE. She continued working with him on over 25 films, including cult classics like HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS (1988), EVIL TOONS (1992), and ATTACK OF THE 60 FOOT CENTERFOLD (1996). She’s worked with fellow “scream queen” Linnea Quigley on over a dozen films, including the already mentioned HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS, and director David DeCoteau’s SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA (1988), and NIGHTMARE SISTERS (1988) to name but a few. Michelle can be found in all kinds of enjoyable “cult” movies from the 80s and 90s like Tom DeSimone’s REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS (1986), NIGHT OF THE LIVING BABES (1987), DEATH ROW DINER (1988), ASSAULT OF THE PARTY NERDS (1989), THE JIGSAW MURDERS (1989), PUPPET MASTER 3: TOULON’S REVENGE (1991), and THE FLESH MERCHANT (1993). She worked with director Donald Farmer on DEMENTED (1994), RED LIPS (1995), and BLOOD AND HONOR (2000) and prolific Spanish cult movie maker Jess Franco on MARI-COOKIE AND THE KILLER TARANTULA (1998) and LUST FOR FRANKENSTEIN (1998). She continued to work throughout the 2000s, appearing in several films for director David DeCoteau, (including his 1313 series), Fred Olen Ray, Charles Band, and even Brinke Stevens when she directed SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA 2 (2022), and more. With over 150 film credits to her name and still working strong, chances are you’ve seen at least a handful of the films Michelle Bauer has been in. Michelle hasn’t really done much as far as convention appearances go since the mid-1990’s. She was with us here at CW back in October 2012 and we’ve had fans asking for her to return ever since.

James L. Edwards

Starting at the age of 12 with J.R. Bookwalter’s first feature film, the Sam Raimi produced THE DEAD NEXT DOOR (1988), James L. Edwards has had a 35 year indie horror career as an actor, screenwriter and producer. His credits include ROBOT NINJA (1989), OZONE (1993), POLYMORPH (1996), BLOODLETTING (1997), CORDOBA NIGHTS (2007) and JUNE 9 (2008). He was also a contributing writer for Alternative Cinema Magazine as well as Blackest Heart Magazine back in their day. In 2020, he released his directorial debut, the romantic drama/necrophile love story hybrid HER NAME WAS CHRISTA (2020). The following year he released his follow-up film, the horror anthology BRIMSTONE INCORPORATED (2021) with co-director Brad Twigg and has continued acting in indie films we’ve screened at the CW Show like HELL VAN (2022)  and others. He recently wrote and starred in J.R. Bookwalter’s return to directing with SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY (2024), which we found to be a terrific homage to the horror and sci-fi tinged films of the late 60s and 70s… which oddly will have its premier convention screening on Saturday at 7:30pm at the the April CW Show. Be sure to join James, J.R. Bookwalter, and whoever they can gather up for a panel and Q&A after the screening too!

Lloyd Kaufman

During his years at Yale, Lloyd got introduced to B-Movies and the work of Roger Corman. This began his interest in movie making and the rest as they say, is history. Writer, producer, director, actor... and pretty much any job required of him to finish a production; that’s Lloyd Kaufman. He is also the founder and president of Troma Entertainment, the independent film company that has given us demented horror-comedies like BLOOD SUCKING FREAKS (1976), THE TOXIC AVENGER (1985), CLASS OF NUKE ‘EM HIGH (1986) and so many more. To date, Troma and Lloyd Kaufman have distributed well over 1000 movies, many of them simply known as “Troma Movies” to the legion of fans who have come to expect a certain amount of gross-out appeal from anything the company distributes. Always busy appearing in other people’s movies while continuing to produce and direct himself, Lloyd managed to produce and direct over a dozen films and short films over the past ten years, including RETURN TO NUKE ‘M HIGH VOLUME 1 (2013) and RETURN TO NUKE ‘EM HIGH’S BUFFALO DREAMS (2014), GRINDSPLOITATION (2016), RETURN TO RETURN TO NUKE ‘EM HIGH (2017) and SHAKESPEARE’S SHITSTORM (2020), a crude parody of ‘The Tempest’. Lloyd loves his Cleveland fans and we’re still wondering why he enjoys Cleveland so much?... Maybe it’s the food? We do have some great food in and around town. And we do have a cool music scene. Maybe that’s it?… Maybe he just enjoys a nice cold Pabst Blue Ribbon tallboy for a remarkably cheap price?… No matter what the reason, Lloyd decided that he couldn’t stay away and will be back with us this April.

James Lorinz

James Lorinz “doorman” character in STREET TRASH (1987) remains one of the funniest scene-stealing characters to ever grace the screen. And to the many fans who happened upon STREET TRASH once or twice during its limited theater run or original video release, “the doorman” seems to be the one character that lingers in the minds of those fans the most. After STREET TRASH, director Frank Henenlotter found James working as an usher at the Cinema 1,2,3 in New York City and cast him as “Jeffrey Franken” in his cult classic, FRANKENHOOKER (1990). In 2000 James wrote, directed, and starred (along with David Caruso) in the short film SWIRLEE, the tragic story of a down on his luck ice cream spokesman - who just happens to be a living ice cream cone that’s willing to due himself in by taking a hot bath! You can also find James in Abel Ferrara’s KING OF NEW YORK (1990), working for the mob in WHO DO I GOTTA KILL? (1992) (aka Me and the Mob) where he also wrote the script. He showed up as an upset driver in ROBOCOP 3 (1993), and can be found in GOD HAS A RAP SHEET (2003), LAUGH KILLER LAUGH (2015), and THE TRANSFIGURATION (2015). He appeared as a teamster in Martin Scorsese’s THE IRISHMAN (2019), as “Eddie” in James Balsamo’s 14 GHOSTS (2021), and was recently in the horror film, THE OVERNIGHT (2022). He’s also appeared in several TV shows over the years, including NYPD Blue, Brooklyn South, Judging Amy, Titus, Unforgettable, The Affair, and the TV mini-series, Crash the System to name a few.

bob%20michelucci.jpg?t=1708892394

Bob Michelucci

Bob spent many a year working as a graphic production artist before he found himself one of the pioneers of horror publishing with his first book, The Collectors Guide to Monster Magazines in 1977. It was considered the “bible” for monster magazine collecting and Bob published the updated second edition in 1988. in 1978, Bob and his partner designed and co-published the slick sci-fi magazine, Questar, with saw circulation reach 100,000 copies at its peak in 1981. In 1981, he formed Imagine, Inc. and began a long career of designing and publishing trade paperback titles like Tom Savini’s Grand Illusions Book 1 and Book 2, Dick Smith’s Monster Make-up Handbook, The Complete Night Of the Living Dead Filmbook, Forrest Ackerman’s Famous Monsters of Filmland trade paperback (with the intro by Christopher Lee) as well as wrestling legend Bruno Sammartino’s autobiography, to name a few books you probably own to this day (all while producing a few TV Specials, documentaries, and videos along the way.) He partnered up with John Russo to publish the magazine, Screen Queens Illustrated, a Playboy-styled magazine featuring the women of B horror; as well as several trading card sets, mini-poster prints, and more. In 1978, Bob played the “Scope Zombie” in DAWN OF THE DEAD that Ken Foree’s character zooms in on during the gun shop scene as well as a zombie that attacks one of the motorcycle raiders later in the film. He also appeared as a priest in CHILDREN OF THE DEAD (2001), a cop in John Russo’s SANTA CLAWS (1996) where he was also a producer and did some special effects. If you’re looking for some cool stuff for our attending “scream queens” to sign (or some of the other stuff he’s published over the years), I’m sure Bob will have plenty of it available come showtime.

Patty%20Mullen.jpg?t=1699121796
Patty Mullen

Actress and model Patty Mullen was the Penthouse “pet of the month” in the August 1986 issue of the popular men’s magazine. She was named “pet of the year” in 1987 and did a follow-up pictorial in the January 1988 issue of Penthouse. Her acting career was brief, but video store regulars would certainly remember her from DOOM ASYLUM (1987) where she payed twins “Judy” and “Kiki” in the starring role. After appearing in the made for TV movie, CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS (1988) and an episode of The Equalizer television series, she appeared as “Elizabeth” in director Frank Henenlotter’s cult horror-comedy, FRANKENHOOKER (1990). You’ll soon be able to find her… well, her voice anyway, as “Daisy Doll” in the horror film, STRANGE TOYS (2023), which is in post-production as we post this little bio.

fred_ray.jpg?t=1698777678
Fred Olen Ray

Writer, producer, and director Fred Olen Ray spent most of his childhood in Florida where, like many of us baby boomers, he grew up watching horror movies that played on TV. His love for those classic horror films turned into a career making horror and science fiction movies like THE BRAIN LEECHES (1978), THE ALIEN DEAD (1980), SCALPS (1983), BIOHAZARD (1985), EVIL SPAWN (1987), EVIL TOONS (1992), ATTACK OF THE 60 FOOT CENTERFOLD (1995), and so many others that made their way to video store shelves that it’s hard to list them all. One of his best known movies is HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS (1988) with popular “Queens of Scream”, Michelle Bauer and Linnea Quigley, and he’s worked with Michelle on over 20 films since THE TOMB (1986), their first film together. Over the years, Fred has worked with a who’s who of movie stars like Buster Crabbe, Kirk Alyn, Cameron Mitchell, John Carradine, David Carradine, Robert Quarry, Lee Van Cleef, Ross Hagan, and so many others that it’s hard to even list them all. As the horror market began to dry up, Fred Ray turned to comedies, family films, and softcore adult videos (many with the word “bikini” in the title) that he sold to Showtime and Cinemax for late night viewing. The last several years have seen him producing and directing a slew of made for TV movies of all types - from horror to family films. With over 30 different pen names that are actually his and over 150 movies under his belt, chances are you’ve seen a few of Fred’s movies and didn’t even know they were his. Fred is also a long time wrestling fan who started his own wrestling promotion called ACW back in the mid 1990s, where he wrestled under the name “Freddie Valentine” and held his own against legends like Terry Funk and Abdullah the Butcher.

Debbie%20Rochon.jpeg?t=1700257118
Debbie Rochon

After ending up as a featured extra in LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982), Debbie Rochon saved up enough money to move to New York and study acting. After a few years of working in theater, she started to land roles in films. She worked with “grindhouse” directors Roberta Findlay and Chuck Vincent a couple of times, continued to work in theater, and started landing lead roles in films by 1994. ABDUCTED 2: THE REUNION (1995) would be her first. Jen%20Rubin.jpg?t=1698777754
Jennifer Rubin

Actress, model, screenwriter, and producer… Jennifer Rubin has wore many hats since the start of her career. Her modeling career led her to acting, where she went on to appear in commercials for Chevrolet, Coke, Budweiser, and David Lynch’s Calvin Klein ads. In 1987, she decided to devote herself to acting and accepted the role of “Taryn White” in Wes Craven’s A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS (1987). She followed up “Elm Street 3” with the horror film, BAD DREAMS (1988), the drama, PERMANENT RECORD (1988) with Keanu Reeves, and Oliver Stone’s THE DOORS (1991). You’ll find Jennifer in films like the creepy thriller, THE CRUSH (1993) with Alicia Silverstone, and the sci-fi / horror film, SCREAMERS (1995) with Peter Weller. She produced and starred in the crime comedy ROAD KILL (1999), and ventured in television land, appearing in series like The Twilight Zone (1985), Tales From the Crypt (1989), Miami Vice (1989), and The Outer Limits (1995); as well as TV movies like DROP DEAD GORGEOUS (1991), THE FEAR INSIDE (1992), FULL ECLIPSE (1993), and THE WASP WOMAN (1995) to name a few. In 2010 Jennifer began writing screenplays, and has several scripts in various stages of pre-production. Meanwhile, she hasn’t really slowed down much with her acting career and continues to tackle any role that catches her eye.

Brinke%20Stevens.jpg?t=1698777832
Brinke Stevens

At an early age, San Diego, CA native Brinke Stevens was acting in school plays, tap dancing on stage, and editing the school newspaper. After graduating from San Diego State University, Brinke went on to earn a Masters Degree in marine biology from Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, and for a time, she worked as a scientist for San Onofre Nuclear Power Station and National Marine Fisheries. Brinke also had a successful career as a model and her print and commercial work soon led to employment as an actress, and she’s appeared in over 200 films to date, making her one of the hardest working actresses in independent cinema if you ask us. One of her first feature film roles was as “Linda” in THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE. Director Amy Holden Jones wanted to cast her in one of the lead roles, but a modeling assignment during the film’s shoot caused her to accept a smaller role as the films first “driller killer” victim. As the 1980s progressed, Brinke found herself working more and more until, as one of the original queens of scream, she helped coin the term “Scream Queen” back when it actually meant something. During the true “scream queen” era, you can find Brinke in several cult movie classics (from directors like Fred Olen Ray, Jim Wynorski, and David DeCoteau), including SLAVE GIRLS BEYOND INFINITY (1987), SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA (1988), NIGHTMARE SISTERS (1988), TRANSYLVANIA TWIST (1989), HAUNTING FEAR (1990) which she sites as one of her favorite films of the time, BAD GIRLS FROM MARS (1989), TEENAGE EXORCIST (1991), and JACK-O (1995). Brinke has appeared in several films that we’ve screened at the CW Show over the years, including REPLIGATOR (1996), THE VAMPIRE HUNTERS CLUB (2001), MARK OF THE ASTRO-ZOMBIES (2002), HEAD CASE (2007), and DEMON DIVAS AND THE LANES OF DAMNATION (2009). As we updated her little bio here, Brinke has thirty new films or shorts currently in some stage of post-production or just completed and ready for release. Her resume is quite extensive and we could never do it justice, so feel free to punch her up on the IMDb and be prepared to be amazed at just how many films you’ve seen Brinke in over the years. In addition to acting, modeling, and dance, Brinke has written and sold several screenplays, as well as fiction and non-fiction articles for such genre publications as WEIRD TALES, MONSTERLAND, and FEMME FATALES. She’s also the inspiration, writer and publisher of the “Brinke of Destruction” comic book series. As a producer, Brinke has helmed and hosted the SHOCK CINEMA and SOMETHING TO SCREAM ABOUT video documentaries. In 2018 she made her directorial debut with the short film, PERSONAL DEMONS, and followed that with director duties on SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA 2 (2022), a segment of the horror anthology TERROR TUNES 4 (2022) and the clips from Hell celebration of Full Moon films, CARNAGE COLLECTION: FEAST OF FLESH (2023).

Joel%20Wynkoop%202.jpg?t=1700257228
Joel D Wynkoop

Joel Wynkoop has been acting, writing, and producing B movies for damn near 40 years now. He co-wrote, and co-directed the horror anthology TWISTED ILLUSIONS (1985) with Tim Ritter, and then went on to appear in Ritter’s hugely popular video rental, TRUTH OR DARE? (1986), and KILLING SPREE (1987) before landing larger roles in Ritter’s WICKED GAMES (1994) and CREEP (1995) where he starred along side Kathy Willets (the notorious Florida prostitute who’s husband / pimp taped her “encounters” with her clients.) In 1992, Joel wrote, directed, and starred in LOST FAITH, a low budget action-comedy that found its way into video stores, and he hasn’t looked back ever since. As an actor, Joel worked with underrated indie director Kevin Lindenmuth on ALIEN AGENDA: OUT OF THE DARKNESS (1996), ALIEN AGENDA: ENDANGERED SPECIES (1998), and ADDICTED TO MURDER: TAINTED BLOOD (1998). He teamed up with Tim Ritter again for SCREAMING FOR SANITY: TRUTH OR DARE 3 (1998), the video “shockumentary” DIRTY COP NO DONUT (1999), DIRTY COP 2: I AM A PIG (2001), TWISTED ILLUSIONS 2 (2004), and DEADLY DARES: TRUTH OR DARE PART 4 (2011). You’ll find Joel in indie horror like ROT (1999), Ryan Cavaline’s SERIAL KILLER (2002), and EVIL TALES 3: THE FINAL CHAPTER (2003), BODY IN A DUMPSTER (2008), INTO THE WOODS (2008), BRAINJACKED (2009), GIRLS GONE DEAD (2012), and CRAZED (2014) to name a few. He also had the honor of starirng in Herschell Gordon Lewis’ last feature film, THE UH-OH SHOW (2009) as gameshow host, Fred Finagler. Joel had directed (and produced, and starred) in several of his own films since LOST FAITH, including segments for anthology horror films, BEFORE I DOE (2003), and TWISTED ILLUSIONS 2 (2004), THE BITE (2005), ALWAYS MIDNIGHT (2006), SLASHER WEEKEND (2015), and a slew of short films. While most of the films he appears in are shot on a shoestring budget, fans of Joel’s films almost always agree that they are more imaginative and entertaining than most of the horror films falling out of the stale, and in dire need of a deep cleaning asshole of Hollywood horror these days. And with roughly 200 acting, producing, and directing credits to his name to date, Joel Wynkoop continues to do his thing… and never look back!

Jim%20Wynorski.jpg?t=1700257328
Jim Wynorski

Jim Wynorski left a successful commercial business in New York and relocated to California in 1980 where he got a job cutting “coming attractions” trailers for Roger Corman. It wasn’t long before Corman offered Jim his first writing and directing job when a distributor wanted a film about a killer in a shopping mall. That film turned into CHOPPING MALL (1986) and the rest is, shall we say, history. From that point on, Jim Wynorski has turned out an average of three to five films a year as a director and even more as a writer and producer, including several films all Wastelanders will know, including BIG BAD MAMA 2 (1987), NOT OF THIS EARTH (1988) with Traci Lords, THE RETURN OF THE SWAMP THING (1989), SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE 2 (1990), HARD TO DIE (1990), 976-EVIL 2 (1991), MUNCHIE (1992), DINOSAUR ISLAND (1994), GHOULIES 4 (1994), VAMPIRELLA (1996), and so many other films that were popular rentals back in the video store days. Never one to find himself pigeon holed into a certain genre, Wynorski made everything from horror and sci-fi films, to action flicks, thrillers, and more. And as tastes changed in the 1990s, he simply changed with the times and started directing made for cable TV films. Jim Wynorski is responsible for well over 150 films in his 30 year career and chances are good you’ve seen more than just a couple of them while flipping through cable TV channels. (Don’t believe us? Then by all means, scroll down his Internet Movie Data Base page and start counting the films you remember seeing. You’ll be surprised.) Since the last time Jim Wynorski was with us he’s got roughly 20 new films in the can, including made for cable TV sex comedies like SEXY WIVES SENSATIONS (2013), PLEASURE SPA (2013), HYPNOTIKA (2013), SEXIPEDE! (2014), and SCARED TOPLESS (2015); to action films like WATER WARS (2014), and SHARKANSAS WOMEN’S PRISON MASSACRE (2015); sci-fi comedies like ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT CAMGIRL (2022), family films like A DOGGONE CHRISTMAS (2016) and A DOGGONE HOLLYWOOD (2017), to horror-comedies like LEGEND OF THE NAKED GHOST (2017), COBRAGATOR (2018), and BIGFOOT OR BUST (2022). His latest is the horror film, KILLBOTS (2023), which was also an alternate title to his popular sci-fi horror film, CHOPPING MALL.

carl%20yorke_1.jpg?t=1698777958
Carl Gabriel Yorke

His first role turned out to be his most infamous role. Carl played “Alan Yates”, the documentary filmmaker that pissed off a tribe of cannibals and found himself on the menu in director Ruggero Deodato’s CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980). Believe it or not, Carl got the role of “Alan Yates” because he has small feet. Producers already bought the wardrobe and needed an actor who wore a size 10 shoe. Carl took the role without reading the script until he actually arrived on the set in South America. During the filming of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST there were even times that he feared they might actually kill him for real to finish the film. Of course that didn’t happen and CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST has gone on to become one of the most notorious cult exploitation films ever made. Although you can find him in feature films like JACK THE BEAR (1993), GHOST IN THE MACHINE (1993) and IDLE HANDS (1999), Carl has also gone on to do television, appearing in episodes of Dynasty, NYPD Blue, Viper, My So-Called Life and Sliders to name a few.

Amy Lynn Best

Amy Lynn Best, a Pittsburgh PA native, has studied acting and dancing since she was three years old. She co-produced and costarred in the independent feature horror film, THE RESURRECTION GAME (2002), and like many independent film producers, she learned the film business from the ground up. On the short haunted house film, TENANT, Amy studied cinematography from that film's director of photography, Bill Fuller. Out of necessity, she learned the basics of grip work, camera operation, and the fine art of line producing. Since meeting her film making husband, Mike Watt, she has acted or worked on nearly a dozen films, including the critically-acclaimed feature, AMERICAN NIGHTMARE (2000), DR. HORROR’S EROTIC HOUSE OF IDIOTS (2003), along with ABATTOIR (2007), SPLATTER MOVIE (2008), DEMON DIVAS AND THE LANES OF DAMNATION (2009), “The Gorge” segment of George Romero’s DEADTIME STORIES 2 (2011), LITTLE BIG BOY (2012), TALES OF POE (2014) and RAZOR DAYS (2015) to name a few.

J.R. Bookwalter

Akron, Ohio native J.R. Bookwalter spent almost four years completing what would become his first feature film: THE DEAD NEXT DOOR (1988). Upon its completion in LA, J.R. ran into producer David DeCoteau, who was just starting his own small production company, and spent the next four years writing, directing, producing, mixing sound or scoring for nine feature films and four special interest videos for DeCoteau. In 1991, Bookwalter used what he had learned and started Tempe Entertainment, further teaching himself the ins and outs of low budget film production and distribution. You name it and J.R. Bookwalter has more than likely tried it in order to get his films made. In addition to producing, directing and editing, you’ll find him occasionally acting, doing make up and effects work and/or pretty much any crew job required of him. In addition to THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, some of the films all fans should recognize that J.R. wrote, produced or directed include: KINGDOM OF THE VAMPIRE (1991), OZONE (1993), THE NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 25th ANNIVERSARY DOCUMENTARY (1993), MIDNIGHT 2 (1993), THE SANDMAN (1996), BLOODLETTING (1997), WITCHHOUSE 2 and 3 (2000/2001), DEAD AND ROTTING (2002), HELL ASYLUM (2002) and so many others. After a long break from directing, J.R. dove back into the fray with the horror film, SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY (2023), which will have a premier screening at the April 2024 Show.

Son of Ghoul

With 30+ years and thousands of shows broadcast on TV, Son of Ghoul is Akron and Cleveland’s longest continuous running horror host; as well as a long time regular here at the Cinema Wasteland show. Live in the Cleveland or Akron area? Then by all means, see if you can’t catch Son of Ghoul’s movie show on television. A life long Three Stooges fan that can actually boast that he owns all 190 Columbia produced Three Stooges shorts on 16mm film, Son of Ghoul presents a trio of Stooge Shorts every Saturday at Noon in Movie Room 1 and has recently started to put together the Saturday morning “politically incorrect” cartoon block for us. After all, Cinema Wasteland, cartoons, and the Three Stooges go together better than drunks and strippers. Well, almost better...
