    Piranha (1978)

Being a guy who really didn’t like “Jaws” as a kid because it was overly long and the shark looked as fake as fake can look, I must say that I loved Piranha - and still do! Joe Dante’s gory and fun horror outing isn’t overly long, and the Rob Bottin ‘n Chris Walas effects hold up well. Plus, having Barbara Steele, Kevin McCarthy, Bradford Dillman, Dick Miller, Belinda Balaski and Paul Bartel in the cast sure doesn’t hurt either. Maybe it was deserved and maybe it wasn’t but I do know one thing, TCM 2 sure did get better with age. The Tom Savini effects that made the film after budget cuts are solid, the atmosphere of the decrepit carnival the family calls home is plenty creepy, and although it may well lack the “grit” of the original, a great camp feel, including a performance by Dennis Hopper as a Texas Ranger looking to avenge his family, and the chemistry between Bill Johnson’s “Buba” (Leatherface) and Bill Moseley’s over-the-top “Choptop” make for some solid laughs as well as scares.

Lee Frost and Wes Bishop were involved with some of the greatest films the Drive-In had to offer in the 70’s and 80’s. One of the best “B” movie crap fests of all time is their “Thing With Two Heads”, starring Ray Milland as dying white bigot brain surgeon Maxwell Kirshner. He convinces his colleagues to preform an experimental and unsantioned medical procedure on him that finds his head transplanted onto the first available body they can find - reluctant death row inmate, Jack Moss (Rosey Grier). Now our white racist finds his head attached to a very large black man that was only trying to find a little time to clear his name of a murder he didn’t commit. Out of print DVD.

  • Twilight People (1972)

Blu-ray and DVD Combo - It’s a retelling of the ol’ “Dr. Moreau” story, Eddie Romero style! Well, it’s actually Romero’s second retelling of the story as he tried it once in 1959 as “Terror Is A Man”, but this one is in color. Former teen idol John Ashley is our lost-at-sea hero who winds up on the dread island of horrors. The doctor’s daughter winds up setting the island creatures loose, which include an ape man, antelope man, a flying bat man, and Pam Grier as the panther woman. Lots of bad makeup and plenty of gory scenes make it a must for B movie fans. Includes interview with director Eddie Romero, trailer and TV spots.
